Why don't you go watch Scarface instead, sweetie?

My mom and my 6 year old were lounging about in my mom's bed and were trading stories. My daughter goes: "Tell me a made up story about a worm, Bai" (Bai means grandmother in Pangasinense)

So, my mother told her a story about a determined little worm who was off to climb to the surface because he wanted to see a different kind of world, a world full of color and a world that was different. I was feeling a little proud and sentimental because my mom told me the same story when I was a kid. She was trying to teach me about life and wanting something so bad you can taste it. The story was about bravery, determination and life's beauty. Finally, the climactic part came. My mother's voice changed and even hitched on a little excited: "...finally the brave little worm broke to the ground's surface and saw, for the first time, sunlight. He was free! He was above ground!"

My daughter nonchalantly added, "And a bird swooped down and grabbed the worm and ate him. The End."

I couldn't help it. I screamed "Oh My God!!! That's not how the story ends!! How morbid of you!" My daughter looked at me and again, in a deadpan matter of factly face said "What? It's funny."

My mother and I looked at each other and were torn between laughing our asses off or be horrified and immediately launch into "butterflies, unicorns and rainbows" mode. I mean, my 6 year old is already cynical and has a weird sense of humor. This isn't supposed to happen!!

Sensing the tension in the room, she rolled her eyes and said "Fine... Tell me the story again, Bai. This time I won't let a bird eat it. But you have to know that birds eat worms. It's a natural fact of life."

My daughter, ladies and gentlemen... I don't know if I should be proud or if I should just surrender myself to the authorities for being a horrible parent.
