Not my city anymore
I've come to realize today that Makati isn't my city anymore.
I used to lust over Makati as a young girl. I loved the fast pace, the glamor, the charm and the fashion. I wanted to be one of those corporate girls in a smashing business suit that ran on the weekends and took their laundry to the laundromat. I wanted to be part of the crowd that knew where the new and exciting restaurants were and what clubs you should really go to.
I lived it and to tell you frankly, looking at it in retrospect, it was all but a poor man's New York.
I went to Makati today to meet up with a few friends. Getting there was nothing like I remembered it, which is really pathetic if you think about it because I used to work and live there! I didn't want to shell out 350 pesos just to get there so I took the bus. The traffic is horrible! HORRIBLE! Good thing I always give myself an hour leeway to get to where I want to be.
I didn't like the fact that there are more "no smoking" signs in that city. There were everywhere! I felt like I was in LA or something where they pretend to not like smoking because it pollutes your lungs but it really shouldn't matter because they were living in a highly congested area!! I don't know about you but between inhaling what's coming out of a bus' ass and smoking a cigarette, I'm going for fucking organic!
There were also more pretentious young ones. The proliferation of the call center has apparently added to the population of fucking posers. Those who smoke and drink 300 peso starbucks coffee while talking to their friends about the latest cellphone they have. They talk with a manufactured American accent and I was biting the urge to go up to them and tell them that it's "pi·rat·ed" not "Pie - rated"
It's not that I totally hate Makati. I had a lot of good memories there. I think I'm just getting old and prefer the quiet and peaceful South.
And yes, just for the record, I admit that we also have horrible traffic here but at least it's scheduled.
