Lilith

I came across this book - The mistress, and it led me to one name that striked a nerve. Lilith.

If you haven't known it yet, Lilith is the mythological first wife of Adam. It is said that when Adam went around the garden of Eden, he saw that each male animal had a female counterpart. After trying to copulate (Beastiality, why not?) with every female animal, he realized that he didn't find one animal that suited him best (the koalas were just too lethargic, He had a hard time kissing the giraffes and the claws on lions were just too much of an S&M thing, I guess). He then called on God and asked him to create a partner for him.

God went for the tried and tested way of creating a human being - spat on the ground and created a woman for Adam. The thing was, Lilith was not from Adam's side so she was assertive and demanded equality. And for some reason, the whole argument that they had was because of sex (when did it become anything else but that anyway?) Lilith didn't want to be under Adam when they were having sex. She felt degraded and insulted. (maybe she prefers yoga positions?) She then spoke the name of God and she disapparated. Adam (being the man that he is!) complained again to God and demanded that this time He gives him a wife that won't be too assertive. Ergo, Eve was created from Adam's side.

Lilith on the other hand, went to the Red Sea where she copulated with the demons living there. To make the long story short, Lilith became Adam's succubus. She is also known to be the temptress divine. She is also the source of the whore archetype. Isn't that sad? That just because Lilith wanted to assert herself, she's considered a whore and a demoness?

Same old story. Same old stereotypes, be it ancient or modern.

Sigh.
