A compliment

On my way to Divisoria today, I got an unexpected compliment from the bus conductor.

As I handed him the fare, he asked:

"San 'to?" (Where to?")

"La Salle" (The university)

"Ilan?" (For how many?)

"Isa lang" (Just one)

"Istudyante?" (Student?)

After a brief pause:

"Hindi pero thank you" (No, but thank you)

Funny blog. Interesting that "Hindi" is the Filipino word for "no." I wonder if the etymology comes from India somehow (maybe early visitors from India were very negative, ha ha).

By the way, is Filipino different from Tagalog? I've read conflicting reports. I'm a wannabe linguist so I'm really curious about these things.

Thanks for letting me add you in my blogroll. To answer your question, there are a lot of Indian words incorporated in the Filipino Language. I'm just not sure what words exactly. I'm just quoting my previous Filipino professor.

Filipino is the official name of the language spoken in the Philippines, however, it was formerly known as Tagalog. There are about 81 languages spoken in the Philippines, with the newest addition of Fagalog (Gayspeak) Currently, they classify Tagalog as a dialect, together with Batangueno and Kabitenio.

Interesting topic...perhaps I'll write about it.
