No matter which way you look at it
No matter which way you look at it, it will remain constant.
In this state of undress - half dressed with socks on his feet and a trucker's hat on, it seemed unlikely that he'd have an epiphany. Perhaps it was at this moment, at this exact moment of undress that he felt he was ready for an epiphany. He wasn't sure if it was really an epiphany or just a moment of humiliation. Catching his reflection in the mirror, he realized that he was still the same. No matter how he tried, he was still the same person he was running away from.
What makes it more ironic is that it's 1961. Turn the year upside down, it's still the same. Even if he put on the most expensive clothes, he was still a pauper - the same classless and generic man he was years before.
He takes a long hard look at himself in the mirror, sighs the deepest sighs and tells himself the only truth he will admit to.
"You are still the same Filipino born in Manila. You will never be white"
